National Climate Change Reports Project Management and Regional MRV Network Development

This year, 2018, UNEP/UNDP Global Support Programe (GSP), in collaboration with the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), will be holding a series of regional Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) workshops in Africa, covering Southern, Eastern, Central and North Africa. The workshop theme will be “National Climate Change Reports Project Management and Regional MRV Network Development”. The workshops will be funded from two UN Environment GEF projects, UNEP/UNDP Global Support Programme (GSP) and the Enabling Activities. GSP has invited other international partners to support these workshops regarded as a South-South collaboration initiative, and discussions are ongoing with some of them.

The four main objectives of the workshops will include;

  1. Enhancing South-South collaboration by sharing experiences and good practices in preparing national climate change reports
  2. Training and discussion on the NC and BUR project processes, including proposal writing, funding requests, implementation, fund management and legal issues, project monitoring, report validation and submission and other key project cycle elements
  3. Training and discussion on key elements of practical MRV arrangements in the country, identifying barriers that exist and advantages can be achieved.
  4. Discussion and consensus building on regional MRV networks, including possible structure, areas of regional collaboration, regional network coordination framework, etc.

The first of these regional workshops will be held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from 28-30 May 2018. Workshop participants will come from 20 countries of the East and Southern Africa regions, namely Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, South Sudan, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Seychelles, Madagascar, Mauritius and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
