Initial results and future expectations from the Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) Global Coordination Platform
Tuesday 16th May 2017, 18.30h to 19.45h
Room: Kaminzimmer

The COP decision adopting the Paris Agreement decided to establish “a Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency in order to build institutional and technical capacity, both pre- and post-2020” that “will support developing country Parties, upon request, in meeting the enhanced transparency requirements as defined in Article 13 of the Agreement in a timely manner.” Upon request by the COP, the GEF has established and operationalized the CBIT, including through voluntary contributions to support developing countries during GEF-6 and future replenishment cycles.

The first set of CBIT projects has been approved by the GEF for implementation in Costa Rica, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda and Uruguay, in addition to funding for a CBIT Global Coordination Platform. UNDP, UNEP and UNEP DTU are implementing the CBIT Global Coordination Platform, to share lessons learned and provide technical guidance, including relevant tools and methodologies. The platform will engage donors, countries, the GEF Partner Agencies, and other institutions to enhance partnership among national, multilateral, and bilaterally-supported capacity-building initiatives. In the framework of such initiative, a coordination meeting with donors and partner institutions, and a CBIT global workshop were held back to back on April 18th and April 19th-20th 2017 in Copenhagen, Denmark, with the objective of launching the CBIT Global Coordination Platform, including initial results and future expectations, and discussing preliminary experiences and priorities among countries.

The objective of this side event is to share with a broader audience the key outcomes of the above two meetings, the approach of the CBIT Global Coordination Platform, and the scope of CBIT work in selected countries. The side event will provide an opportunity to discuss expectations, challenges, and related experiences to CBIT implementation.
